Hi Vanessa (I’m Sean btw, ‘Chuck’ is a pseudonym - I’m an aspiring spec fic writer using this to vent about the attention economy).

I loved your article! I was smiling as I read it. I’m a 52 yr old Melbourne man and was just diagnosed two months ago. I am the carbon copy of everything you just described and understand your experience so well it’s hilarious. After so many years of overthinking and trying to work out why I was ‘different’.

Turns out ADHD and high intelligence have been at odds and kind of ‘cancelling’ each other to an extent to make me seem entirely average and massively frustrated under the hood.

These traits together can be quite isolating and have involved a LOT of shape shifting, emotional suppression, people pleasing, and finding myself a square peg in the round holes I’ve place myself in…some of those realisations are terrifying to face but necessary.

I now have an instruction manual and found my tribe at last. Yess! 😁

EVERYTHING in your article = touché. I got a formal diagnosis after weeks with a specialist clinical psychologist with hours of therapy sessions, a battery of cognitive and personality tests, and importantly, school reports and questionnaires completed by those close to me. Just like you this is the most significant moment of my entire life. I feel so much less alone already.

I could go on - I won’t - that’s so adhd 😂

Nice to see we’re part of a very cool gang! Que bueno! 😉
